Trayectos is an openly licensed first-year Spanish curriculum developed by Texas A&M University with support from COERLL at the University of Texas at Austin. It is designed as a complete beginner pathway rather than a collection of isolated exercises. The course uses the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world as part of the learning material and combines digital media, interactive activities and two volumes of textbook content.
The curriculum follows a learner-centred, multimodal approach grounded in Multiliteracies pedagogy. That means you work with more than written dialogues: images, audio, video, cultural texts and digital situations all help you interpret and produce Spanish.

The materials are not built around one idea of Spanish culture. They invite you to encounter different communities, varieties and communicative settings. This makes culture part of the language work rather than a decorative section at the end of a lesson.
How a learner-centred unit can work
A useful Trayectos session moves through four actions:
- Interpret: identify what a text, image, audio or video is communicating.
- Notice: record useful phrases, grammar or cultural clues.
- Interact: complete the activity and compare your response with the prompt.
- Create: produce a short message using the same resource or situation.
The point is not to consume every medium quickly. Spend enough time asking who is speaking, for whom, in which setting and with which language choices. Those questions turn authentic material into language practice.
A route through the two volumes
- Choose the next unit from the textbook and preview its communicative goal.
- Work through the media before opening the explanation.
- Keep a page for vocabulary, a page for grammar and a page for cultural observations.
- Complete the interactive activity and mark what you can do without help.
- Produce a short text, audio response or comparison using the unit's theme.
If you study independently, keep a weekly record of the unit, media type, new expression and one question. If you study with a class, the open licence makes it easier to share adaptations or extend an activity.
Who this OER fits
Trayectos is a strong choice if you want a full first-year foundation, open materials or a broader view of Spanish-speaking communities. It requires more planning than a short app course because the curriculum offers many formats and pathways. Use the textbook to keep a sequence and the digital activities to keep the language connected to real communicative contexts.
